The Berlin Wall 1969-1972

In 1969 I drove to Berlin to see wether I would accept a professorship at the University of Arts ( Hochschule der Künste). Once in the city center, I began to feel a low throbbing vibration, like a transformer plugged into the main supply, but without a machine to relieve the current load…
The air felt electric. / Like a magnet, “The Wall” drew me back on each of my bi-monthly visits to the University for the next 20 years. I decided to photograph it in its entirety, starting at the southeast end and working northwestwards. After a few months and over 550 photos I figured I had documented most of the inhabited area next to the Wall…
